Would you have preferred we argue about toilet paper roll orientation (over or under?)

It absolutely should go over.

papertygre, in this comment

I was going to write a longer entry in response to this earlier, but I think this pretty much sums it up:

I had never thought about toilet paper roll orientation before she made this comment. It literally hadn't occurred to me that it was a choice.

A few days ago, one of my housemates replaced a toilet paper roll, and put it in the “under” orientation. The first time I went to the bathroom after that, it annoyed me. The second, it annoyed me. The third, I just had to switch it.

I've often called myself very sentimental in the past, but I think that may have been a misdescription. Much of what I sometimes classify as sentimentality is actually just obsession.

(Of course, I'm not 100% sure there is a firm line between the two—they seem to reinforce each other, a lot of the time.)

Having the toilet paper oriented such that the new sheets hang *BEHIND* the roll is an offence in the eyes of God and Man. Don't worry. You weren't being obsessive. You were being righteous :D

Join the OCD club. I'm the same way, and I have *many* more things that have to be just so or else I go nutty.

the "under" orientation just seems wrong; and I've definitely changed the roll before when careless roommates put it that way.

I agree that if you have to pick an orientation, over is the way to go. My point was just that it went from being something I completely ignored to something I couldn't help thinking about, on the basis of one off-hand comment.

I don't mind the OC elements of my personality, lately. When they were in full force, they were sometimes distressing, but they've abated so much lately that I've actually missed them.

Liking one thing or another a certain way doesn't make one compulsive.
